It didn't take long to figure out that leaving the house in the country at the end of the weekend, especially one that included guests and
entertaining, entailed several hours of pre-departure cleaning. Well, it didn't take long (after that) to put an ad in the local paper
for a part-time housekeeper. Of the many who responded, one was chosen ... and the years rolled by.
Even though we'd done the interview and checked her references, the bottom line is that the woman was an absolute stranger. She was spending
hours per week completely alone in our home, and we never saw what she was doing ... only what she had done.
After our apartment in the city was burgled in 1995, I installed a number of internet cameras that send snapshots up to my Web site at
one-minute intervals. It didn't take long to duplicate the system in the house in the country ... and it didn't take long (after that)
to fire the housekeeper: The hours she worked were fewer than those she reported, her
rottweiler napped on the couch in the den, and she
actually swept stuff under the rug!
There's nothing disrespectful or dishonest about installing a Home Cam and keeping an eye on those who work for you, especially if they're alone in
your home.
